It is widely spread in most regions in China, except Tibet and Xinjiang, with different styles of shadow puppet play in different places. However, the characters shaping and performance skills are all quite exquisite, with play themes including the Chinese ancient magic, myths, religions, monarchs, legal cases, wars, as well as talented scholars and pretty ladies, the secular life and etc.The shadow puppet play with written records dated back to the Song Dynasty, and Bianliang, the capital of the Northern Song Dynasty had had the performance of shadow play yet. At that time, the shadow plays were divided into the shadow hand play, the shadow puppet play (including the shadow paper play), and the large shadow play. Many grand occasions of the performances had been recorded by the Song people. While in Yuan Dynasty, owning to the westward conquest by the Mongolia troops, the Chinese shadow plays were introduced into the Middle East, Arab, Turkey, Egypt, and other countries, and later brought to some East European countries. In Ming and Qing Dynasties, the contents and forms of the shadow plays had some new developments, thereby forming the various genres with local colors.

The principle and methods of shadow performance adopted by the shadow puppet played an important leading role in the invention of the modern movie and the development of the movies and cartoons. Nowadays, the Chinese shadow puppet plays have been collected by the museums of many countries in the world; meanwhile they are the best presents sent by the Chinese governmental leaders for their foreign counterparts.

Shehuo ladle mask is mainly painted on the wooden ladle – a utensil used to scoop water or grain in ancient China, so it is called ladle mask. The ladle was a daily utensil used by ancient Chinese to feed the horses; usually the round shaped was for scooping water, while the rectangular shaped for getting feedstuff.

To prevent their livestock from the injury of natural pest/disease and ensure their safe and peaceful life, the forefathers painted gods or amulets on the ladles, so the masks were the beautiful wishes for peaceful and happy life of ancient Chinese. The ladle, with wood as the raw material, is easy to make, and the mask can be painted either in a simple or sophisticated way. The ladle masks primarily use colors to embody the characteristics of the figures, usually black standing for strong, red loyal, white treacherous, yellow violent, blue imprudent, and green righteous.

As an object used to ward off evil spirit and expel desolation for the residential buildings, the ladle masks were usually hanged in the hall or bedroom to express the house owner’s wishes for good luck and plenty of wealth; and still some just used the masks as decorations. Special attention is paid on the eyebrows, eyes, and mouth when a mask is being painted and colored. Based on the temperament and facial features of the painted figure, the craftsman would paint the five organs and skin color in an exaggerated way, so as to highlight the innate character of various figures. Usually strong contrast of color is stressed, which is bold and unconstrained, and has strong symbolic meanings, for instance, red symbolizes loyal, white treacherous, black upright, grey brave, yellow vigorous, blue reckless, and so on. Thus the ladle mask is quite popular with the folks. Thanks to the inheritance and development of modern folk artists, the ladle mask has become the treasure of Chinese folk art.

China was famous for the Silk Road. NSR handcrafts‘ artists develop the Chinese traditional paint to the wall paper, With the traditional craftsmanship—–Gongbi, landscapes, birds, flowers and legendary figures are painted vividly by hand on silk mounted rice pape, which material named Juan in Chinese, for peple hang it on the wall as wallpaper or frame it as picture. The history of Hand-painted Silk Wallpaper can date back to the 17th ~18th century, designed by European wallpaper designers by incorporating Chinese art elements from Chinese artists, which is a good example of the combination of Chinese and western arts. Attracted by its unique artistic value and charm, a large number of royal family and aristocrats in Europe selected hand-painted wallpaper for the decoration of their palaces and castles. Hand-painted wallpaper is now commonly seen in various ancient European buildings.

Chinoiserie Collection is a beautiful series of hand-painted wallpaper designs based on classical Chinese themes including floral and nature scenes which were traditionally used on screens and other decorative objects in China. The style of painting done today is in the same historical style that was used on the original wallpaper that was so popular in Europe starting in the late 17th Century, when these wallpapers were first exported from China. These wallpaper scenes created a mural effect that would cover the walls of an entire room without repeating the design. Today these designs are appropriate for most Dining Rooms, Bed Rooms, Living Rooms and Entryways of today’s interiors.

Chinese painting depicting either allegorical or historical scenes date from as far back as the Tang and Qing dynasty (1200-1900 BC). They are painted in a special technique which creates a feeling of antique quality and beauty. The designs are well known around the world and can still be seen in museums in China and elsewhere. The designs include scenes of village life and ceremonial settings populated with detailed figures, while others depict beautiful and serene landscapes. Chinese artists descend the art skill and apply it to the hand-painted silk wallpaper. NSR HANDCRAFTS have re-designed some of these scenes and captured not only a wonderful decorative effect but have retained the centuries-old Chinese cultural and artistic aspects of the original work. Our artists use the same traditional Chinese painting skills used for thousands of years to hand paint each design with precision to maintain the original art form and style. Each design of Antiquities Collection has at least 8 continuous panels with no design repetition.

Carpet: Turks have a special attitude towards the arts such as carpet weaving. The oldest known carpet on the world which contains 347.000 knots per square meter (255 per square inch) is more than 2500 years old and wove by Turkish people in double knotted style. It was discovered in the grave of the Altai Mountains in Siberia by Russian archaeologist (Rudenko) in 1947. Today it is exhibited in the Hermitage Museum in Leningrad. It is clear that Turkish women have been weaving carpets for a long time. Turkish carpets are very beautiful and also durable floor coverings still today. No one knows precisely when and where the technique of weaving first started but there is no doubt that the weaving art, in general, is started in Central Asia by nomads.

As a first they learned the flat weave technique to use goat hair in the making of their tents. Over the period of time they began to use same techniques of flat weave for making of floor coverings to isolate themselves from the humidity and then they used them as saddle bags for horses and camels, blankets and many more additional uses. They called them as a “kilim” and designs of kilims reflected stylized depictions of the worshipped symbols of pagan religion. After kilim they started to add pile to the basic flat weaves and began to weave rugs which were very supple. Nomads used these rugs during their long voyages as sleeping bags on horse’s back.

Turkish people were nomads and came from Central Asia to Anatolia in 1071.Because of environmental, sociological, economic, and religious reasons, art of carpet weaving widespread from Central Asia to Turkey. Seljuk Turks introduced hand woven carpet techniques to Anatolia in the 12th century. Turkish carpets are never same; each one is a creation from a new and unique. At a glance maybe two carpets can look similar but closer examination reveals the subtle differences. This specialty gives each carpet its own individuality and charm. As a material they mostly use wool on wool (wool pile and wool warps and wefts), wool on cotton (wool pile on cotton warps and wefts) or silk on silk (silk pile on silk warps and wefts). Carpets can be made mostly with natural or sometimes chemical dyes and natural dyes are more expensive than chemical ones.

The Ministry of Culture sponsors a number of projects to revive traditional weaving and also dyeing methods in western part of Turkey because of fearing that old carpet making methods would be lost in future. In Istanbul as well as Turkish Carpets, many carpet sellers sell pieces from other different countries such as Iran, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan.

The difference between Turkish and Iran ones is knotting style. Turkish ones have double knot technique and others have single knot which is Persian knotting style. Also Turkish ones tend to have a higher pile, more dramatic designs and more varied colours than others. Carpets made today mostly use traditional patterns such as the commonly used eye and tree patterns and incorporate all sorts of symbols. Still today in Turkey, villagers weave carpets for their dowry and own family’s use. In Istanbul, there are various shops that you can purchase a Turkish hand-woven carpet and many palaces which are open to visit that you can see nice Turkish carpets on floor.

Beautiful handicraft may be seen in quantity in the imperial and religious buildings of Istanbul today, because after the conquest of Constantinople in 1453, the Ottoman sultans started a huge building program. For example The Sultan Ahmed Mosque in Istanbul (the Blue Mosque) contains 20,000 tiles which are still shining. The Topkapi Palace and The Rüstem Pasha Mosque, the Tomb of Hurrem Sultan, the Tomb of Suleyman I, the Mosque of Sokullu Mehmed Pasa, the Mosque of Piyale Pasa and the Valide Atik Mosque are also tiled.

It is in the nature of all visitors to want a souvenir from the countries they visit, something special and unique to that part of the world. It is usually local handicraft which fits the bill and Panama does not disappoint in this department.

The most famous Panamanian handicraft is the mola created by the Kuna Indians of San Blas. It is a colorful reverse appliqué panel which forms part of the blouse of their traditional costume but which can be adapted as cushions, wall-hangings, table mats, sandals, t-shirts, caps …..the list is endless.

Wood carvings are another popular item on the visitor’s shopping list. The Wounaan-Embera Indians from the Darien are experts. They transform hard wood, usually “cocobolo” from the jungle into works of art. Birds, frogs, snakes, wild cats and jungle foliage all serve as subjects for their skilled hands.

Exquisite baskets also come from the Darien region. Dyed with natural earth tones, their intricate patterns are time-consuming work. Some of the best take months to complete and command high prices. Some are so fine they are even bought for display in museums and art galleries in other parts of the world.

The tagua is yet another speciality of the Wounaan-Embera tribes. Tagua is the Indian name for the ivory nut “an oval-shaped nut about the size of a hen’s egg. The best are carved from just one nut and it is amazing the detail an expert carver can coax from that small surface…… spiders on webs, frogs on leaves, pelicans with fish, leaping dolphins.

The Guaymie Indians, mountain people mainly in the provinces of Chiriqui and Veraguas, produce beautiful patterned bead necklaces which in their culture are worn by the men on ceremonial occasions but which make attractive gifts for ladies. Guaymie women wear colorful long dresses, appliquéd with multi-colored triangles at neck, sleeves and hem. Adapted to a more modern style, they make comfortable leisure wear.

Pre-Colombian and colonial gold jewelry is reproduced by a company called Reprosa, using the same lost-wax method employed by ancient artisans. Naturally it has been adapted to suit more modern tastes but the end result is outstanding.

There is a crafts market in Balboa which is a treasure-trove of souvenir items and another at the ruins of Old Panama. The Sunday market in El Valle is also a good place to shop for souvenirs.

The word “paper” is derived from the ancient word “Papyrus”. In the past, papyrus scrolls were made by taking slices of the inner part of the papyrus stem, flattening then pounded into a hard, thin sheet. The age-old craft of hand papermaking traces its roots from china through the Mid-East to Europe. It set off one of mankind’s greatest communication revolutions.

There has been a complete revival in homemade papermaking crafts, today. Paper handicraft is traditionally made with various vegetable fibers or cotton rags. Each sheet of handmade paper is destined to play an important role in the final work of art. The possibilities for what can be accomplished with handmade paper and paper pulp are limitless.

The concern about the disappearance of forests, coupled with renewed interest in the quality of papers generated new study of the paper maker’s materials, especially the pulps and fibers. Hand papermaking is an energetic creative outlet and paper pulp has become not only a vehicle, but also an artistic medium in itself. Some of its beautiful aspects are that no tree needs to be harvested and paper is a stunning example of recycling at work.

Skilled Indian makers use a variety of raw materials for making handmade papers. These materials range from all manner of vegetable matter (including leaves, tree moss, potatoes, and flowers), old ropes, canvas, linen and cotton rags. Any raw material can be used as long as it has fibers capable of forming a continuous sheet. These materials guarantee the most important characteristics of handmade papers for exquisite usage in fine-arts ensuring longevity, brilliance, opacity and creativity.

Colorful handmade paper is effectively used in making a multitude of decorative items, greeting cards, wallpapers, carry bags, gift boxes, art portfolios, and much more. The handmade paper stationery range includes handmade paper letterheads, visiting cards, envelops, note pads, memo cubes and many more items.

That the beauty of life is a thing of no moment, I suppose few people would venture to assert. And yet most civilised people act as if it were of none, and in so doing are wronging both themselves and those that are to come after them. For that beauty which is meant by art is no mere accident of human life which people can take or leave, but a positive necessity of life if we are to live as nature meant us to, that is to say unless we are content to be less than men.

Do not think that the commercial spirit which is the basis of your life and cities here is opposed to art. Who built the beautiful cities of the world but commercial men and commercial men only? Genoa built by its traders, Florence by its bankers, and Venice, most lovely of all, by its noble and honest Handicraftsman.

I do not wish you, remember, ‘to build a new Pisa,’ nor to bring ‘the life or the decorations of the thirteenth century back again.’ ‘The circumstances with which you must surround your workmen are those’ of modern American life, ‘because the designs you have now to ask for from your workmen are such as will make modern’ American ‘life beautiful.’ The art we want is the art based on all the inventions of modern civilisation, and to suit all the needs of nineteenth-century life.

Do you think, for instance, that we object to machinery? I tell you we reverence it; we reverence it when it does its proper work, when it relieves man from ignoble and soulless labour, not when it seeks to do that which is valuable only when wrought by the hands and hearts of men. Let us have no machine-made ornament at all; it is all bad and worthless and ugly. And let us not mistake the means of civilisation for the end of civilisation; steam-engine, telephone and the like, are all wonderful, but remember that their value depends entirely on the noble uses we make of them, on the noble spirit in which we employ them, not on the things themselves.

It is, no doubt, a great advantage to talk to a man at the Antipodes through a telephone; its advantage depends entirely on the value of what the two men have to say to one another. If one merely shrieks slander through a tube and the other whispers folly into a wire, do not think that anybody is very much benefited by the invention.

The train that whirls an ordinary Englishman through Italy at the rate of forty miles an hour and finally sends him home without any memory of that lovely country but that he was cheated by a courier at Rome, or that he got a bad dinner at Verona, does not do him or civilisation much good. But that swift legion of fiery-footed engines that bore to the burning ruins of Chicago the loving help and generous treasure of the world was as noble and as beautiful as any golden troop of angels that ever fed the hungry and clothed the naked in the antique times. As beautiful, yes; all machinery may be beautiful when it is undecorated even. Do not seek to decorate it. We cannot but think all good machinery is graceful, also, the line of strength and the line of beauty being one.

Give then, as I said, to your workmen of to-day the bright and noble surroundings that you can yourself create. Stately and simple architecture for your cities, bright and simple dress for your men and women; those are the conditions of a real artistic movement. For the artist is not concerned primarily with any theory of life but with life itself, with the joy and loveliness that should come daily on eye and ear for a beautiful external world.

But the simplicity must not be barrenness nor the bright colour gaudy. For all beautiful colours are graduated colours, the colours that seem about to pass into one another’s realm– colour without tone being like music without harmony, mere discord. Barren architecture, the vulgar and glaring advertisements that desecrate not merely your cities but every rock and river that I have seen yet in America – all this is not enough. A school of design we must have too in each city. It should be a stately and noble building, full of the best examples of the best art of the world. Furthermore, do not put your designers in a barren whitewashed room and bid them work in that depressing and colourless atmosphere as I have seen many of the American schools of design, but give them beautiful surroundings.
